Stamp collecting is known as the king of all hobbies and it began at the same time when the first ever postage stamp, Penny Black was issued by Britain in 1840. Some collectors look for historical value, some geographical aspects, and for many the subjects depicted on stamps are of interest. Stamp collecting is easy, informative, educational, and can be great fun. It can also be profitable and a great investment monetarily.
Even though stamp collecting is not as popular as it was in the early 20th century, it is estimated that there are around 200 million collectors worldwide. Advanced stage of stamp collecting involves serious research and is called philately. The expert collectors are called philatelists.
Trivia: The first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru was a keen stamp collector. The US President Franklin Roosevelt was an avid stamp collector too. And the French President Nicolas Sarkozy is known for his growing stamp collection today.
